ABOUT
The Sydney Spectres are Sydney's premier LGBTQIA+ inclusive basketball club.
A HISTORIC COMMUNITY
Founded in 2001, the Sydney Spectres, along with Spectres Australia, is Australia’s leading LGBTQIA+ basketball club, with many active players competing, training, and building community on and off the court.

ALL WELCOME. ALWAYS.
The Sydney Spectres is committed to fostering a vibrant and inclusive basketball community, welcoming not only players but also referees, coaches, and basketball enthusiasts of all levels and backgrounds who want to compete, connect, and celebrate the game together.
LOVE OF BASKETBALL
We currently have two competitive men’s teams, three competitive women’s teams, and one social mixed team, along with several affiliate teams, competing in leagues and tournaments across Sydney.

TOURNAMENTS, EVENTS AND SOCIALS
Beyond the court, the Sydney Spectres runs a full calendar of events and tournaments that keep our community connected. We host regular socials, from casual post-game pub dinners and drinks to trivia nights, driving range evenings, and other activities. Our players also compete in various tournaments, and we’re proud to be preparing for the Gay Games in Valencia, Spain 2026.

FAQ
1. Question:
Do I need to identify as LGBTQIA+ to join the Sydney Spectres?
Answer:
Not at all. While we are proudly an LGBTQIA+ club, we welcome all allies, players, referees, coaches, and fans, regardless of sexuality, gender identity, or background. Many of our members are not part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and they’re a loved and important part of our community. If you love basketball and want to be part of an inclusive club, you’re welcome here.
2. Question:
What’s the best way to join?
Answer:
The easiest way to get involved is to come along to one of our Saturday training sessions. If you can’t make Saturdays, we sometimes run events and activities on other days too, so it’s always worth reaching out - we’ll help you find the best way to get started.
3. Question:
There isn’t a Sydney Spectres team located conveniently for me, what can I do?
Answer:
Reach out to us anyway! There may be other players in your area who are also looking for a team, and you never know - it could be the start of a brand new Spectres team where you are.
