Volunteer Opportunities

The Sydney Spectres is a wholly volunteer run organisation - absolutely no one takes a paycheck, from the president to the trainers. We're looking for volunteers across a range of roles to help keep our programs and our community running strong. You don't need to commit every single week, be experienced, or be a basketball expert; we just ask that you are reliable, communicative and show up at least once a month (ideally twice), and always act in the best interests of the Sydney Spectres and in line with our code of conduct. We'll support you every step of the way (and of course, we’re volunteers too!).

What's in it for you?

Beyond the satisfaction of helping build and maintain this wonderful community you are probably already a part of, many of these roles carry professional value. Coaching, event management, community organising, content creation, sponsorship and partnership development - these are transferable skills that look great on a resume and are experiences that stand out to employers. You'll also get the chance to develop those skills in a low-pressure, supportive environment, backed by a committee that wants to see you succeed.

Roles That Benefit From Basketball Knowledge

Onsite Organisers - Weekly Social Basketball Wednesdays, 6:30pm - 8:30pm (2 hours) Green Square Public School 2 positions available You're the person in charge on the night at Weekly Social Basketball. That means keeping the court to RSVP'd players only, providing basic first aid if needed, and making sure the vibe stays fun and welcoming. You'll also run the basketball side of things - picking the format, splitting teams, and making sure there are regular breaks. You'll also be responsible for making sure the court is set up and ready to go: clean bibs, basketballs, and ideally signage in place before players arrive. All equipment is provided - you just need to make sure it's there, out and ready.

Coaches - Women's & Gender Diverse Training  Mondays, 7pm–8pm (1 hour) Green Square Public School 2 positions available

Run or help run coaching sessions for our Women's program. The more coaching experience the better, but we're also keen to hear from people who might want to co-coach, or who can just confidently run drills. Preference for these positions will be given to players in the Women's and Gender Diverse community.

Co-Coaches & Assistant Coaches - Train & Play  Saturdays, 1.5 hours (time varies) Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Center 1 position available

Our Saturday sessions are big and they need support. Whether you're an experienced coach or someone who's happy to run drills and keep things moving, we'd love your help keeping Train & Play running smoothly.

Competition Team Organisers Anytime, Sydney

2 positions available

This role is about finding women's, men's and mixed basketball competitions in Sydney that the Sydney Spectres might want to play in, gauging interest within the club, and putting teams together. You'll work with the executive committee to pick a captain and social captain, support them through the season, and handle payments to make sure everyone's paid before they play. The work for this position ebbs and flows. In the leadup to a competition you might need to do 1-2hrs over of work over the course of a week. Then, simple ad hoc work through the course of a season, but you might go weeks without requiring to do anything.

Roles Suitable for Anyone

Court Guardians - Women's & Gender Diverse Training  Mondays, 7pm–8pm (1 hour) Green Square Public School 3 positions available

A straightforward but important role. You'll make sure the court stays a safe, exclusive space for women and gender diverse players - keeping anyone without an RSVP off the court and ensuring the booking is respected.

Sponsor & Partner Engagement Anytime, Sydney

2 positions available

Help keep Sydney Spectres events free or low-cost by securing sponsors and funding partners. If you've got a knack for relationships, outreach, or business development, this is a meaningful way to contribute. This is the type of role where there is no real limit to how much work you can put in. We'd ask you do 1-2hours per week most weeks.

Volunteer Organiser Anytime, Sydney 1 positions available

The person who makes sure all the other roles are covered. You'll keep track of who's available for what, make sure every Sydney Spectres event has someone in charge, and work to put the right people in the right spots. Work for this role is very ad hoc and unpredictable, but you can expect to spend at least 1-hrs per week most weeks ensuring all events are covered.

Content Creators Anytime, Sydney 1 positions available

Show the world how good the Sydney Spectres are. Work with the executive committee to create social content that captures what makes this community special. Whether you shoot, edit, write, or design - we want to hear from you.

This is the type of role where there is no real limit to how much work you can put in. We'd ask you do 1-2hours per week most weeks.

If any of these sound like you, get in touch. Every hour you give makes a real difference to this community.
