Weekly Social Basketball

Our Weekly Social Basketball is Sydney’s only LGBTQIA+ community-run basketball competition. It is fun, social competition in a low-pressure, inclusive environment. Players of all skill levels and all genders are welcome.

How it works

• Everyone arrives and warms up together for approximately 15 minutes before games begin.

• Players sign up as individuals and are organised into teams of three on the night - either randomly or to ensure balance.

• Games are played in a rotating 3x3 half-court format.

• There are typically five teams each week. Four teams play while one team sits out, rotating so everyone plays each other.

Schedule
Every Wednesday night from 6:30pm, running for two hours.

Commitment
There is no ongoing commitment. You only play when you book in. Bookings open up to 30 days in advance. Bookings are done via Calendy.

Location
Green Square Public School
3 Joynton Ave, Zetland
A short walk from Green Square Station.

Competition format
Each team plays every other team in a round-robin. The team with the most wins at the end of the night is the overall winner.
If time allows after the round-robin, we may run:

• A first and third place game

• A full-court 5v5 game for everyone

This depends on numbers and how much time remains.

Game rules

• Games run for 11 minutes

• The team that scores gives up the ball

• The team with the most points at the end wins

• If a game is tied, each team selects one shooter and a best-of-five free throw shoot-off decides the winner. If after five free throws there is still no winner, we move on to golden point.

• Games are self-refereed. Players are expected to call their own fouls honestly and respectfully. Over-calling or fishing for fouls is discouraged as it takes away from the flow and spirit of the game.
   

Fees

• $5 per session for members

• $10 per session for non-members
   

Maximum 15 players per night.
Not a member yet? You can become a member for $50 per year, which gives you access to all Sydney Spectres programs, perks and events.

Inclusivity
This is a community-run LGBTQIA+ basketball program.
All genders and all skill levels are welcome.
The focus is on respect, fair play and creating a space where everyone feels safe to participate.

Weather policy
The court is undercover, but extreme weather can still affect play.
If a session is cancelled due to weather, all players will be refunded.
